During the week of February 29, 2016, through March 6, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 204 DUI arrests compared with 172 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 236 major accidents so far this year compared with 263 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been three fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in four fatalities, compared with three fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in five fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 20 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
