Responding to a 4:51 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that a 2004 Peterbuilt rubbish truck was traveling south on Kīlauea Avenue when it collided with a 2001 Lincoln four-door sedan traveling west on Kawailani Street.

The 29-year-old man, who was the driver of the Lincoln, was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition.
