Hawaiʻi Island police have initiated a Coroner’s Inquest in connection with a body that was recovered from the ocean on Monday evening (May 15).

At 6:35 p.m. the Hawai`i Fire Department responded to a report of a body that was seen floating in Hilo Bay and launched their rescue boat to recover the disrobed body that was located approximately a quarter of a mile off of the Wainaku shoreline. The body was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where the official death pronouncement was made at 8:18 p.m.

The victim has not yet been identified and appears to be a Caucasian male, possibly in his 50’s or 60’s, between 5-foot-9 to 6-feet-tall, having dark-brown or black hair with a beard and mustache.

Detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation and an autopsy has been requested to determine the cause of death.
