Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a theft at a store in Hilo on Monday (July 4).

At approximately 9:05 a.m. Monday, a man entered a retail store on the 300 block of East Makaʻala Street and was observed to select and conceal numerous items in a backpack. He then selected a pair of shoes and placed them on his feet before exiting the store with the items, valued at $398.

When store employees approached the man outside the store, he dropped the backpack and fled on foot toward Railroad Avenue. He was still in possession of the shoes.

He is described as in his mid-20s, about 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds with dark hair. His image was captured on a surveillance camera.

Police ask anyone who recognizes the person in the photo to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Officer Victor McLellan at 961-2203.
