During the week of August 24, 2015, through August 30, 2015, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 693 DUI arrests compared with 790 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 988 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,056 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been 15 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with nine during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.

To date, nine fatalities were related to drugs (6), alcohol (0), or a combination of both (3).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
