During the week of September 19, 2016, through September 25, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 788 DUI arrests compared with 774 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,013 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,134 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been 18 fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (three of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 21 fatalities, compared with 12 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 15 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 40 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
