One man is in the hospital and another is in police custody following a dispute that turned violent Wednesday evening (October 7) in Pohoiki.

In response to an 8:15 p.m. call, Puna Patrol officers learned that two men had been arguing outside a home on the 13-0800 block of Pohoiki Road when they got into a physical confrontation. The victim, a 24-year-old Pāhoa, man was stabbed multiple times.

During the confrontation, another resident intervened, causing minor injuries to the suspect’s head.

The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Boris Yarmolyk, 61, of Pāhoa was arrested at the scene on suspicion of first-degree assault. Fire Department paramedics treated him at the scene for his injury before police took him to the Hilo police cellblock.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation.
