A Nevada man died after encountering problems in waters at Hapuna Beach Park on Thursday (November 12).

In response to a 2:53 p.m. call, South Kohala officers responded to a possible drowning. When they arrived, they learned that 80-year-old Glen Giles of Las Vegas had been about 20 yards out in the water when he called for help. He was taken to shore, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation was attempted. Fire Department personnel took him to North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:03 p.m.

The case has been classified as a coroner’s inquest. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
