60th Recruit Class

60TH POLICE RECRUIT CLASS — Members of the hawaii County Police Department’s 60th recruit class are sworn into the department. The 11 recruits were swron in during luncheon ceremonies held at the Nani Mau Gardens.

Eleven new officers have joined the ranks of the Hawaii County Police Department.

The 11 were members of the 60th Police Recruit Class, who graduated during luncheon ceremonies held Wednesday (January 9, 2002) at the Nani Mau Gardens. Mayor Harry Kim was the keynote speaker at the event.

The graduates will now be assigned to veteran police officers around the Big Island and undergo another three and a half months of field training. After that, they will be assigned to various police districts around the island.

The graduates also reduce the number of police vacancies in the department to 12.

Graduating at Wednesday’s ceremonies were August K. Aina, Gerald M. Baptiste, Steve A. Bugado, Sandor J. Finkey, Ray H. Fukada, John Mac Kalauli Jr., Thomas Koyanagi, Todd C. Pataray, Daniel Rances, Reynold H. Kahalewai and Thomas A. Shopay III.

Officers of the recruit class were Kahalewai, president; Shopay, vice president; and Finkey, secretary-treasurer.

Rances was named outstanding recruit; Fukada won the academic award; Shopay won the physical fitness award; Kahalewai earned the firearm award; and Pataray was recognized for keeping the best notebook.

Trainers for the graduating recruits were Sergeant Jay N. Enanoria and Officers Wayne M. Hisashima and Jason Y. Shinoda.
