MEDIA RELEASE

Police officers arrested 12 persons for liquor law and litter offenses Friday and Saturday nights (March 23 and 24, 2001) in a crackdown on underage and public drinking in Hilo.

The 12 were arrested for 22 liquor law and two litter law offenses.

A special crime reduction unit comprised of Juvenile Aid Section, Traffic Enforcement Unit and Hilo Patrol officers conducted the sweeps, concentrated in the Banyan Drive, Panaewa Farm Lots and Upper Kaumana areas.

Six of the 12 persons arrested were older than 18, and the six juveniles were between the ages of 16 and 17.

Detective John Ancheta of the Juvenile Aid Section said the sweeps are part of an on-going operation to apprehend underage drinkers before they get behind the wheel of a car.

Big Island police have made 85 arrests of underage drinkers and 35 arrests of adults for drinking violations since the beginning of the operation in December 2000.
