13 arrested in two separate Puna drug busts 02-17-04

Big island police and federal agents arrested 13 persons for a variety of drug offenses while executing search warrants on two separate residences in the Ainaloa subdivision of Puna.

At about 8:40 a.m. Friday (February 13, 2004), officers from the Hilo Ice Task Force — assisted by officers from the East Hawaii Vice Section, Criminal Intelligence Unit and Puna Patrol and agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Drug Enforcement Administration — served a searched warrant on a Weston Way residence. Officers arrested 11 individuals on 25 charges and recovered 20.9 grams of ice, numerous drug paraphernalia and $175 in cash.

At the same time, officers served a second warrant on a Coral Drive residence, arrested two persons on four charges.

At the Weston Way residence, which had been raided twice previously, police arrested Gilbert Desa Jr., 45, of Ainaloa; Theodore Bonilla, 26, of Hawaiian Paradise Park; Kapeka Grover, 19, of Honomu; Virginia Silva, 40, of Keaau; Cherise King, 23, of Kaieie; Vanessa Lorenzo, 20, of Pepeekeo; Keola Penovaroff, 26, of Hawaiian Beaches; Daryl Moreira, 49, of no permanent address; James Rodrigues, 34, of Hawaiian Paradise Park; Shona Minczer, 30, of no permanent address; and Sally Bohol, 28, of no permanent address.

Desa, Bonilla, Grover, Silva and King were charged with a variety of drug-related offenses, including promoting dangerous drugs, promoting detrimental drugs, illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. Desa is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $4,500 bail, Bonilla in lieu of $3,000 bail, Grover in lieu of $5,100 bail, Silva in lieu of $3,100 bail and King in lieu of $2,000 bail.

The rest were released pending further investigation.

At the Coral Drive residence, officers arrested Rainie Taniguchi, 39, and James Ahsam, 39. The two were charged with promoting dangerous drugs, promoting detrimental drugs and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia.

Taniguchi is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $2,050 bail, and Ahsam was released on his own recognizance.
