MEDIA RELEASE

A 19-year old Puna man died Thursday (June 17, 2004), from injuries sustained in a single vehicle traffic casualty that occurred on Nanawale Boulevard near Kehau Street in Pahoa, Hawaii. Two juvenile passengers were also injured in this incident.

The victim is identified as Alika K.A. Kumai, of Pahoa.

Responding to a 3:08 a.m. call Thursday (June 17, 2004), police determined that Kumai was operating a 2003 Dodge 4-door sedan, traveling north on Nanawale Boulevard approaching Kehau Street. Kumai apparently lost control of the vehicle, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned, ejecting all occupants.

Kumai was pronounced dead at 5:27 a.m. at the Hilo Medical Center. The two juvenile passengers of the vehicle were transported to the Hilo Medical Center and are listed in fair condition.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in this incident.

Thursday’s death was the 21st traffic fatality on the island of Hawai’i so far this year compared to 14 at the same time last year.
