The Hawaii County Police Department welcomed 16 new police officers into its ranks Thursday (November 18, 1999).

The 16 were members of the 57th Police Recruit Class who graduated during luncheon ceremonies held at the Crown Room of the Hawaii Naniloa Hotel.

The new officers will be assigned to veteran police officers around the island and will undergo another three and a half months of field training. After that, they will be assigned to the various police districts around the island.

Thursday’s graduates are David Abelaye, Darren M. Ah Chong, Rio S. Amon-Wilkins, Fetuutuuanai F. Amuimuia, Paul N. Applegate, Daylan D. Asuncion, Akira E. Edmoundson, Grad J. Elarionoff, Jason N. Grouns, Warren W.H. Ke, Leonard Keao Jr., Kayne K. Kelii, Stacy A.N. Leialoha, Edward J.M. Lewis Jr., Ranier L. Neri, and John E. Smith Jr.

Officers of the recruit class were Ah Chong, president; Grouns, vice president; and Amon-Wilkins, secretary-treasurer.

Ah Chong was named as the outstanding recruit; Edmoundson won the academic award; Abelaye won the physical fitness award; Applegate earned the firearm award; and Amuimuia was recognized for keeping the best notebook.

Trainers for the graduating recruits were Sergeant Jay N. Enanoria, Officers Wayne Hisashima and Dexter Veriato.
