Forty-one basketball teams, composed of 194 youths aged 6 through 17, competed in the first “Click It or Ticket” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament held on Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Konawaena Gymnasium.
In the 8-and-Under Division, Stingrays 1 edged Wuz-Up 8-6 for the championship. Stingrays 2 finished third.
In the 9-10 Division, Kohala defeated Stingrays 1 by a score of 11-7 to claim the title. Imua finished third.
In the 11-12 Division, Stingrays 1 upended the Waimea Knights 10-8 in the title game. Airtime finished third.
In the 13-14 Division, Keaau outlasted Stingrays II 11-10 to win the division. Kohala finished third.
The High School Division featured the Tigers, composed of Kealakehe High School players, who defeated Nu Skool 13-8 to claim the title. Stingrays finished third.
“The goal of the ‘Click It or Ticket’ 3-on-3 Tournament was to increase awareness of the seat belt law requiring youths and teens in the front and back seats to be belted,” said Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Section. “We definitely increased awareness and received pledges from the youths and teens that they will use their seat belts. Ultimately it’s about reducing injuries and saving lives.”
The East Hawaii “Click It or Ticket” 3-on-3 will be held this Saturday, March 22, and Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the Keaau High School Gym. The public is invited to attend the tournament.
Games will be played on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
