MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department issued a total of 77 citations for automobile seat belt and child restraint violations during “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaigns held in Pahoa, Keaau and Kurtistown over the past two weekends.

Besides the 77 seat belt and child restraint citations, officers also issued 36 citations for other violations and made 10 arrests, including one for drunk driving.

Sergeant Randy Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section, said that the “Click It or Ticket” campaign not only consists of a media and educational campaign held several times a year, but is a continuing program enforced throughout the year.

“We want to remind members of the public to wear their seat belts always and that enforcement will continue throughout the year, not only when they hear the ‘Click It or Ticket’ commercials,” Apele said.

Police are also reminding the public that all youngsters aged 4 through 17 are required to be buckled with seat belts as passengers in the front and rear seats of an automobile. The fine is $77 for each seat belt citation.
