MEDIA RELEASE

Police have charged a 31-year-old Hilo man with a number of offenses, including kidnapping, for allegedly abducting his former girlfriend and holding her against her will for several hours.

Gregory K. Isabel was charged Monday (May 7, 2001) with violating a protective order, kidnapping, abuse of a family or household member, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. He is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $24,000 bail.

At about 1:15 a.m. on Thursday (May 3, 2001), the suspect allegedly confronted his former girlfriend at a Hilo bar, violating a protective order prohibiting him from making contact with her.

An investigation later determined that after the confrontation, the suspect left the bar, entered his former girlfriend’s four-door Honda Accord and hid in the rear of the car.

As the former girlfriend and a female friend were driving home, the suspect allegedly sat up. The former girlfriend stopped the car tried to run away, but the suspect allegedly grabbed her, forced her into the car and drove off with her, leaving the other woman behind. The victim’s friend then reported what happened to police.

The suspect allegedly drove his former girlfriend to an isolated field in Pepeekeo, where he kept her against her will until about 4 a.m., then released her unharmed. The victim then drove herself home.
