MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii County Police Chief James S. Correa has honored individual members of the “Aina Keepers” of Goodwill Industries with individual certificates of appreciation for their work to eradicate graffiti and litter from Hilo.

The certificates were issued to Taj Gunter, group supervisor, and members Jeff Dela Torre, Nathan Cowdrey and Mark Tellio during the department’s commanders’ meeting held Tuesday (June 18, 2002) at the Hilo police headquarters.

The members were commended for their work on “more than 100 projects targeting graffiti and litter in both private and public properties which were left damaged and unsightly taggers and litterbugs.”

“Your dedication and commitment in deterring future taggers and keeping our island home beautiful is commended,” the certificates said.

Working with the Hilo community police officers and Hilo businesses, the Aina Keepers paint over graffiti-ridden walls and other areas and clean up littered areas in Hilo.

Anyone interested in donating their time or supplies to the Aina Keepers can call Gunter at Goodwill Industries, 961-0307, or the South Hilo Community Police Team at 961-2350 for more information.
