During the week of January 1-7, 2000, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and five of them were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 24 DUI arrests, a 23 percent decrease from the 31 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 28 major accidents so far this year, compared to 52 during the same period last year, a decrease of 46 percent.

There have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year.
