MEDIA RELEASE
The Hawaii County Police Department is currently training 12 new police recruits as members of its 59th Recruit Class.
The trainees will undergo six months of academic and physical training, followed by three and a half months of field training with experienced police officers.
The recruits are expected to finish their training and be assigned to the various police districts by mid-October.
The hiring of the 12 recruits has reduced the number of vacancies in sworn officer positions to five.
Currently, the police department has 395 sworn and 136 civilian positions.
