MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department is reminding motorists that patrolmen have beefed up operations against drunk driving during graduation period this month.

Patrol and traffic enforcement units, supplemented by special enforcement units, will be setting up DUI roadblocks in an attempt to prevent major accidents. Roving patrols on the lookout for drunk and speeding motorists have also been increased.

Police Chief James S. Correa said the department acknowledges that graduation is a time for celebration and parties. But he cautioned graduates to celebrate safely and legally.

The department is reminding everyone -- graduates, parents and the general public alike -- that police will be looking out for the following violations that commonly occur at this time of year:

It's against the law for children 14 years of age or younger to be out after 10 p.m. and for young people from 15 through 17 years of age to be out after 12:30 a.m.

Police are encouraging parents to know the whereabouts and the activities of their minor children.
