Kona police have arrested and charged Lewis Glenn Cooper, 40, in a burglary that occurred in May at a business in the Kaloko Light Industrial Area.
Cooper, of no permanent address in Kona, was arrested at 7:55 p.m. Thursday (July 3, 2003) after he turned himself to police.
He was subsequently charged with three offenses stemming from the burglary -- burglary, first-degree theft and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. He is currently being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $9,000 bail.
Responding to a call on May 26, 2003, Kona police determined that a woodworking shop on Kauhola Street had been burglarized during the previous night or the early morning.
The burglar had used a company vehicle to remove a safe and its contents, valued at more than $20,000, from the shop.
Police had issued a news release earlier in the week seeking the public's help in finding Cooper. After his arrest, police thanked members of the public who encouraged the suspect to turn himself in.
