Big Island police are reminding motorists to drive with extra caution this Halloween and watch out for trick-or-treating children, especially during times of darkness.

Halloween this year falls on Monday (October 31, 2005).

The Police Department has also issued the following safety tips for parents:

• Youngsters should be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating.

• Youngsters should stay within their own neighborhoods and visit only those homes they are familiar with.

• Youngsters should visit only those homes that have a porch light on.

• Costumes or clothing should be light-colored or have reflective materials attached.

• Facial makeup may be better than masks for safety because it is less restrictive and provides for better vision. If your child is using a mask, make sure it fits properly so it does not severely restrict his or her vision.

• Children should carry a flashlight for illumination. They should not use lighted candles or flames of any kind. Costumes should be made of fire resistant materials if at all possible.

• Youngsters should follow all traffic rules. They should:

• Cross streets at corners and crosswalks and obey all traffic signals and signs.

• Walk on sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks, they should walk facing traffic and stay as far off the shoulder of the roadway as practical.

• Not wear a mask when crossing the street.

• Treats should be closely examined by an adult before any of it is consumed.

• Unwrapped candy should be discarded.

• Fruits should be washed thoroughly and examined carefully for tampering. It is recommended that fruits be cut into small pieces or not eaten at all.

• Baked goods should not be consumed unless you know who gave the treats.

Parents are urged to notify the Police Department if they find any suspicious treats. It is recommended that persons welcoming trick-or-treaters leave a porch light on to encourage visitors.

Police officers will be on patrol in neighborhoods to maintain safe conditions for children.

Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and to be on the look out for pedestrians during this period.

To ensure a safe holiday, police will also continue DUI checkpoints and patrols around the island.
