Puna police arrested a 35-year-old man Friday (April 28, 2006) for allegedly stalking and harassing a 16-year-old girl at a bus stop after school.
The girl's father reported on Wednesday (April 26, 2006) that a man had been whistling and yelling at the high school student at a Hawaiian Beaches bus stop since January. According to the father, the man's behavior escalated on Tuesday, when he allegedly followed the teenager.
Officers conducted a stakeout the next two days. Thursday they witnessed the suspect whistling and calling to the girl.
Police arrested Ryan Lee Oliveira of Hawaiian Beaches on Friday and charged him with one count of harassment by stalking and one count of harassment. Both are misdemeanors. Oliveira is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $500 bail.
Police ask the public to report any suspicious activity near school bus stops by calling 911 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
