MEDIA RELEASE

A 24-year-old Pahoa woman died Sunday (July 2, 2006) after being involved in a motor vehicle/pedestrian collision on Route 130 in the area of the 9-mile-marker.

The woman was identified as Francene Kuamoo of Pahoa.

Responding to an 8:52 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that Kuamoo was having a domestic argument with her boyfriend and had exited their pickup truck when she was struck in the middle of the highway by a 68-year-old Pahoa man who was traveling in the Keaau direction in a 2006 Toyota 4-door sedan.

Fire rescue personnel transported Kuamoo to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Norbert Serrao of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-8118.

This is the 18th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 16 at this time last year.
