REPORT NO. C06020480
Three men and a woman are in custody as police investigate a burglary in Kona on Tuesday (July 4, 2006).
A 63-year-old woman reported that when she returned to her Hau Street home in the Kaloko subdivision around
2:20 p.m., a man and woman were in a car in her driveway. They told her they'd been looking for a friend and fell asleep.
The couple drove away and the woman went inside and found her house had been ransacked and jewelry was missing.
The woman's son, who lives in another house on the property, saw a second man hiding in the bushes.
They called police with a description of the man and the license plate of the car.
Responding police officers stopped the car on Kaloko Drive. A few minutes later, they spotted a man matching the description of the man in the bushes riding in the back of a pickup truck. Officers stopped that truck.
Police arrested the couple in the car, Michael Luth, 40, of Kailua-Kona and Athena Ahuna, 43, of Kamuela, as well as the driver of the truck, Marc Spatz, 43, of Kailua-Kona and his passenger, Youness Oubad, 20, of Kailua-Kona, on suspicion of burglary. The four have not been charged but are being held in the Kona cellblock pending further investigation by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Section.
Police ask anyone with information about the case to call the Kona police station at 326-4646, ext. 253.
