Media Release

The Hawaii Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating a man and a woman who are wanted for numerous theft and forgery cases for cashing bogus payroll checks.

John Hauoli, 37, and Ewa Gilbert, 31, are responsible for producing payroll checks made out to themselves under the pretense that they are legitimate checks administered by various companies from Hawaii and the mainland.

Hauoli is described as Hawaiian, 5-foot-10, 200 pounds with tattoos on his neck and short black hair. Gilbert is described as part Caucasian and part Asian, 5-foot-7, 170 pounds with shoulder-length black hair. They may live in Puna.

In addition to asking for the public's help in locating the pair, police are warning merchants who routinely cash payroll or second-party checks to be aware that these suspects may enter their establishments and try to cash bogus paychecks.

Police ask anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hauoli or Gilbert to call Detective Kenneth Quiocho of the Area II Criminal Investigations Section at 326-4646, extension 281, or the Police Department's non-emergency number at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.  All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
