Media Release (update No. 2)

An autopsy conducted on Tuesday (October 7) on the body of Cameron Mauga determined the cause of death to be a single gunshot wound to the chest. 

Police have also located David Lewi, the 30-year-old brother of the suspect. He has spoken with detectives.

On Sunday (October 5) at 9:07 a.m., Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a fight and gunshots. They found Mauga with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m.

Not long after learning of the incident, police arrested Desmond Lewi in connection with the shooting a short distance away on Kauhane Street in Keaukaha. 

Lewi was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and two additional firearm offenses. He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $1,000,000 bail pending his initial court appearance in South Hilo District Court tomorrow afternoon (October 8).

Detectives have not located the weapon, believed to be a 12-gauge shotgun.  Detectives searched the Kalanianaole Street and Kauhane Street areas on Monday (October 6).
