...charged with attempted robbery, kidnapping and terroristic threatening

Media Release (update)

Police have charged an Arizona man in connection with an attempted robbery Wednesday (October 14) along Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona.

Emil Delao of Tucson, Arizona, was charged at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (October 17) with attempted robbery, kidnapping and terroristic threatening.

An 18-year-old woman reported that she was walking by the rock wall of Hale O Kane Park at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday when a man began speaking to her, followed her and told her he was going to rob her. As the woman tried to run away, the man knocked her down and she screamed. The screams attracted passersby and the suspect fled the scene without taking anything.

The woman was not injured.

Police investigation led to Delao's arrest Thursday afternoon at the Kona airport, where he was waiting to catch a scheduled flight to the mainland.

Delao is being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $6,000 bail pending an initial court hearing scheduled for Monday.
