MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person or persons who removed an ATM machine from a business establishment on Mamo Street in downtown Hilo late Monday night (April 16).

Police responded to Mamo Street after an anonymous caller reported that someone had removed the ATM machine from a store window located at the corner of Mamo and Punahoa Street. Responding officers determined that the person or persons dismantled the facing of the ATM machine and then removed the inner console, which contained an undetermined amount of money.

Damage to the ATM machine was estimated at about $3,500. Whoever was responsible then left the area in a vehicle described as a white Jeep Cherokee. Officers later located the Jeep in the downtown area. Officers determined that the Jeep had been removed earlier from Aupuni Center at 101 Aupuni Street.

Police ask anyone with information about these thefts to call Officer Ben Tajon at 961-2213 or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
