Media Release (update)

Hawaii County police have arrested a second person in connection with an attempted murder Thursday (May 1) in lower Puna.

Thirty-year-old Pele Aulani Mahi of Wainaku was arrested Friday morning (May 2) at a Keaau business establishment.

The incident began around 7:25 p.m. Thursday when detectives with the department’s Vice Section attempted to serve a search warrant on a car at the intersection of Kahakai Boulevard and Moano Street in Hawaiian Beaches. It was reported that the car, with two occupants, accelerated rapidly toward one of the officers present. Officers fired at the car, striking it several times.

Investigation has confirmed that the gunfire did not strike either of the occupants. A male police officer was slightly injured when the car fled the scene.

The car was later found abandoned in another area of the subdivision. One of its occupants, 27-year-old Rinalee Shimizu of Pahoa, was located nearby and arrested for attempted first-degree murder.

Mahi was arrested without incident at 10:20 a.m. Friday for promoting a dangerous drug.

Both women are being held without charges while detectives continue the investigation.

A standard administrative investigation is also being conducted by the department’s Internal Affairs Division.
