…suspect in bomb threat

MEDIA RELEASE

Police are looking for a male suspect who walked into a Hilo bank Tuesday (December 16, 2003) and told employees he had explosives in his safety deposit box set to go off soon.

The suspect was identified as David Austin Lenhard, 52.

After the suspect left, employees of the American Savings Bank on Pauahi Street immediately shut down the bank and called police.

Police and bank employees then contacted a locksmith to open the suspect’s safety deposit box.

The bank will remain closed until further notice.

Responding to an 8:30 a.m. call, police determined that the suspect did not demand anything, but instead left the bank and escaped on foot in an undetermined direction.

The suspect, Lenhard, is described as being a Caucasian, being 5-foot-10, weighing about 160 pounds and having brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information on Lenhard’s whereabouts is asked to call Detective Greg Esteban of the East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2384 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
