DECEMBER 17, 2006
REPORT NO. C06039466
A 10-year-old Honokaa boy was in critical condition Sunday (December 17, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/bicycle crash at the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) and Apua Road in Honokaa.
Responding to an 8:13 a.m. call, Honokaa patrol officers determined that the 10-year-old boy and his 13-year-old brother were on a bicycle and traveling east on Apua Road. They failed to stop at a stop sign and broadsided a 2002 Isuzu Rodeo multi-purpose vehicle traveling south on the Hawaii Belt Road. A 63-year-old Honokaa man was driving the SUV.
Fire rescue personnel took the two boys to North Hawaii Community Hospital. The 10-year-old boy was later flown to the Queens Medical Center on Oahu and the 13-year-old was confined to North Hawaii Community Hospital in fair condition.
The driver of the SUV was not injured.
The boys were not wearing helmets. It is unclear who was the operator of the bicycle and who was the passenger.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent injury case and are continuing their investigation. Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call Officer Andres Fojas of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-8889.
