HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
WEST HAWAII CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DIVISION
CAPTAIN JULIAN H. SHIROMA
NOVEMBER 14, 2003
Two fishermen on a crabbing expedition discovered the apparent remains of a body Friday (November 14, 2003) south of the Lapakahi State Historical Park in North Kohala.
Responding to a 4 a.m. call, North Kohala police determined that the remains were those of a human body located amid kiawe trees about 200 to 300 feet from the shoreline.
Police said the body appeared to have been there for some time. Because of the advance stage of decomposition, neither the identification nor the sex could be immediately determined.
Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
They are asking anyone with information about the case to call the West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4204 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
