MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are investigating the death of a 54-year-old woman whose body was found submerged in a car off the Pohoiki Boat Ramp in the Isaac Hale Beach Park in Puna.

Police have identified the woman, but are withholding her name until notification of next of kin.

Responding to a 7:30 a.m. call Sunday (January 16, 2005), Puna patrol officers found the woman inside the submerged vehicle, a 1995 Ford Thunderbird two-door coup.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Police believe that no foul play was involved in the woman’s death. East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section Detectives have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are asking that if anyone saw the victim’s purple Thunderbird operating in the vicinity of Pohoiki, Puna, in the early morning hours of Sunday or has any information about the incident to call Detective Juergen Canda at 961-2381 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
