The results of an autopsy on the body of a 55-year-old man found Thursday (January 31, 2002) in downtown Hilo indicate that the victim died of a brain injury and fractured skull.

Responding to a 4:46 p.m. call, Hilo patrol officers found the body of the Caucasian male at the foot of a staircase at the old City Hotel on Beckley Lane near Ponahawai Street.

The victim, whose name is being withheld until notification of next of kin, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:48 a.m. Friday. The autopsy was conducted at 11:28 a.m.

At this time, police do not suspect the man’s death resulted from foul play, and Hilo Criminal Investigaton Section detectives are continuing to investigate his death as a coroner’s case until a final determination can be made.
