Puna police and fire rescue personnel looking for a lost child found the body of a 6-year-old girl who had been murdered, apparently in a vacant house in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision of Puna.

Responding to a 6:03 p.m. call reporting a missing child, police and fire rescue personnel started a search in the immediate area of the child’s home.

At 8:30 p.m., searchers discovered the body of the victim in a vacant house on Opihi Street. The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, and police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are withholding the victim’s name until positive identification can be made. No other details were immediately available.

Police have classified the case as a murder.
