Detective Andrew S. Burian received a certificate of appreciation Thursday (March 18, 1999) from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), Pacific Region.

At the monthly district commander’s meeting, Police Chief Wayne Carvalho presented the award to Burian, a detective-sergeant with the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section.

The framed certificate of appreciation praised Burian for his “outstanding efforts that have materially contributed to the attainment of the highest standards of cooperative law enforcement and justice in the United States of America.”

The local chiefs of the nine federal agencies belonging to the task force signed the certificate. The organizations are: U.S. Coast Guard, Drug Enforcement Administration, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Naturalization Service, U.S. Customs Service, Bureau of Tobacco and Firearms, U.S. Marshal’s Office and U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Burian was recognized for his investigation into the murder of two brothers, both Mexican nationals, involved in a Mexican heroin ring. The murders occurred in July 1997 in the Volcano subdivision of Mauna Loa Estates.

Burian’s investigation was instrumental in the successful federal prosecution of two other Mexican nationals who were involved in the drug ring.
