A Hawaiian Beaches bus stop before and after vandalism

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii County police are asking the public for assistance in identifying the people responsible for damage to several bus stops in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision in Puna.

Puna patrol officers responded to a criminal property damage call on the morning of April 25. Community members reported damage to several bus stops along Kahakai Boulevard. Police investigators believe a vehicle may have been used to cause the damage.

The bus stops were built from supplies donated by local businesses and volunteers for the children in the Hawaiian Beaches and Hawaiian Shores areas. They have served as a reminder of how a community that works together can make positive changes in their neighborhood.

Community leaders have made immediate repairs to the bus stops. They said these acts of vandalism won’t stop them from continuing their work in the community. They are offering a reward for information directly leading to the arrest of the vandals.

Police ask anyone with information about the vandalism to call the lead investigator, Officer Jenny Lee, or Community Policing Officer John Briski at 966-5835.
