MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Big Island police made a total of 96 DUI arrests as part of a nationwide campaign to protect motorists from drunk drivers.

As part of the “You Drink & Drive, You Lose” national crackdown, conducted from December 19, 2003, through January 4, 2004, officers set up 23 DUI checkpoints that resulted in 16 DUI arrests, 35 other arrests, one seatbelt citation, one child restraint citation and 61 other citations.

Concentrated patrol efforts during the same period resulted in an additional 73 DUI arrests and 66 other arrests.

During the campaign, the Hawaii County Police Department worked with the State Department of Transportation to provide a safer Christmas and New Year holiday period. Officers were out in force conducting sobriety checkpoints and patrolling streets and highways looking for drunk drivers

The “You Drink & Drive, You Lose” campaign, launched in December 1999, is a comprehensive prevention effort focused on highly visible efforts by criminal justice agencies to deter drunk driving and save lives.
