Two persons were injured Friday (July 4, 2003) when a car lurched forward, struck a pedestrian and crashed through the front door and window of a Hilo restaurant.

Responding to a 9:35 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that a 1995 Mazda Protege being parked suddenly lurched forward, hit a 71-year-old pedestrian and then crashed into the Sum Leung Chinese Kitchen on 50 East Puainako Street, injuring a 38-year-old female employee inside.

The two injured persons were taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where they were reported in stable condition. The pedestrian suffered an injury to his left shoulder and a laceration on his forehead. The female employee suffered first- and second-degree burns to her legs because of hot water and hot food knocked off a buffet table inside the restaurant.
