MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE
During the first week of the two-week “National Click It or Ticket Campaign,” Big Island police issued more than 100 seat belt and child restraint citations.
During the period of November 17 to November 24, 2003, police issued citations for 120 seat belt and eight child restraint violations.
Mayor Harry Kim had proclaimed the two-week period from November 17 to November 30, 2003, as a “National Click It or Ticket Campaign.”
In conjunction with the mayor’s proclamation, the Hawaii County Police Department joined more than 13,000 law enforcement agencies in the national “Click It or Ticket” mobilization.
As part of the campaign, officers have intensified enforcement of seat belt laws by setting up seat belt checkpoints. Drivers failing to restrain themselves and their child passengers will be ticketed and are subject to a $77 fine.
So far this year, Big Island officers have issued 4,976 seat belt citations and 267 child restraint citations.
