The Hawaii County Police Department will take part in another “Click It or Ticket” campaign to boost the use of seat belts.
The campaign, the third this year, will take place from November 25 through December 1.
During the campaign, part of a national effort, Hawaii County police officers will actively enforce the state seat belt law.
State law requires that drivers and all front-seat passengers in motor vehicles wear seat belts and that children up to the age of 4 years be secured in a child restraint seat. In addition, all passengers under the age of 18 in the back seat must also be buckled up.
The fine for failure to comply with the law is $67 if paid before the scheduled court date. If paid on or after the scheduled court date, the fine increases to $92.
The “Click It or Ticket” campaign was conducted last from August 25 through September 8 this year in Hilo, Kona and Puna. During that time, police officers issued 205 citations for seat belt violations and three citations for child restraint violations.
A similar campaign conducted in May and June of this year resulted in the issuance of 738 citations for seat belt violations and 25 citations for child restraint violations.
