It’s still not to late to sign up to take part in any of the sports events featured in the ninth annual Hawaii Police Commemorative Fund Tournament next week.
The annual fund-raising event, to be held May 14-16, 1999, features four sporting events — the Kenneth K. Keliipio Softball Tournament, the Shige 5K Run and Walk, the Daison M. “Froggie” Morita Mixed Volleyball Tournament and a basketball tournament.
To sign up for the individual sports events, call the event coordinators at the following phone numbers:
- Five-kilometer run and 1.5-mile walk — Elroy Osorio Jr., 966-5835. The entry fee is $15 per person, which will include a commemorative tournament insulated water jug. For those who sign up later than May 12, 1999, the entry fee will be $20.
- Basketball — Randy Apele, 961-2213. The entry fee is $150 per team.
- Softball — Keoni Rodrigues, 961-2213. The entry fee is $150 per team.
- Mixed volleyball tournament — Tammy Victorine, 961-3107. The entry fee is $50 per team.
The public is welcome to attend and participate.
Proceeds from the tournament go for a good cause. A portion of them will go towards the construction of a memorial in memory of officers killed in the line of duty. Another portion will fund scholarships at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Community College for students seeking a degree in the administration of justice.
Officer Gregory Esteban of the South Hilo Patrol Division is overall coordinator of the tournament.
