MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Big Island police have filed additional charges against the 28 year-old Hilo man and his 28 year-old female companion who were arrested Friday afternoon (January 6, 2006) at a Hilo auto parts store.

Wren Kealoha Evans also known as Wren Beaumont was charged Tuesday evening (January 10, 2006) with 3 counts of first degree burglary, 5 counts of negotiating a worthless instrument, 6 counts of second degree theft and 1 count each of second degree forgery, second degree identity theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and unauthorized use of a propelled vehicle. Bail for this group of charges has been set at $100,000.

Evans was also charged Tuesday evening with numerous traffic offenses relative to his involvement in recent police vehicle pursuits. He was charged with second degree reckless endangering, 9 counts of reckless driving, 8 counts of resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle and 1 count each of accident involving damage to vehicle or property, duty to give information and render aid and no operator’s license. Bail for these offenses was set at $7,050.

Evans is being held at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center on these charges in addition to similar financial crime charges filed on January 8, 2006 when his bail was set at $25,000.

Evans’ companion, Helena Kaleiki of no permanent address in Hilo was charged Tuesday afternoon (January 10, 2006) with third degree promoting a detrimental drug, third degree promoting a dangerous drug, prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia, 2 counts of negotiating a worthless instrument and 2 counts of second degree theft. Bail for Kaleiki has been set at $10,000 pending her initial court appearance. She is being held at the Hilo cellblock.

Detectives continue to review reports involving additional financial and property crimes for which this pair was being sought. Still, more reports of similar financial crimes continue to surface daily relative to this investigation and are expected to continue for a while. More charges are expected to be filed in connection with this investigation. Police have consulted with the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Oahu for possible federal prosecution.
