Media Release

Big Island police are warning the public about an apparent financial scam that appears to be widespread.

Numerous people have reported receiving cell phone messages claiming the recipients are eligible for a lower interest rate on their credit cards.

Police caution the public not to give their credit card number or any other personal or financial information over the phone or internet.

If you think a phone call sounds legitimate, confirm that by calling that financial institution’s phone number listed in the phone book rather than a number someone gives you in a phone message, an e-mail message or a letter. Don’t become a victim of identity theft.
