Media Release (update)

Big Island police have charged a 45-year-old Hilo woman with 15 offenses in connection with a credit card reported stolen last year.

Cynthia Ann Johnasen was arrested Wednesday (January 19) and charged with unauthorized use of personal information, two counts of theft/forgery of a credit card, four counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, four counts of identity theft and four counts of theft. Her bail was set at $159,000. She was held at the Hilo police cellblock until her initial court appearance Thursday (January 20).

In May, the victim reported that someone was accessing her financial account at a local bank in Hilo and withdrawing funds without authorization. Total amount taken was $1,107.50.

During the course of the investigation, police recovered video surveillance depicting a woman approaching the ATM and using it to make the unauthorized withdrawals. Police published the photos on the Police Department’s website. They also featured the case on the TV show “Hawai’i Island’s Most Wanted.”
