MEDIA RELEASE

Officer Ruel Dalere of the Puna Patrol was named Officer of the Month for June 2005 by the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaii.

Dalere received the award during a luncheon meeting Thursday (August 18, 2005) at Uncle Billy’s Hilo Bay Hotel.

Nominated by Sergeant Darrell Huston, Dalere was recognized for using his contacts with the community to convince an escapee from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center to turn himself in to the police in June.

In recommending Dalere for the award, Huston said:

“In this year alone, Officer Dalere has issued more than 330 citations, investigated more than 140 criminal complaints and has also responded to more than 180 miscellaneous complaints from the public.

“His investigative skills have led to many closures of criminal cases this year, including several burglaries.

“He has consistently displayed a ‘team’ approach by being always available and willing to help his coworkers and accepting assignments without complaint. His willingness to work long hours to assist with manpower shortages has helped boost morale.”

Dalere, a former Maui County Police officer, transferred to the Hawaii County Police Department in August 2003. He worked in the Kona District until September 2004, when he transferred to the Puna District.
