MEDIA RELEASE

A 67-year-old Kailua-Kona died Friday (April 19, 2002) after he was involved in a one-car traffic accident on Kamehameha III Road in Keauhou, North Kona.

Responding to a 9:25 p.m. call, police officers determined that the victim was driving a 1995 Ford four-door sedan west on Kamehameha III Road when he stopped on the road and slumped back in his seat. The vehicle’s passenger got out of the car to provide assistance, but the car rolled and struck a stonewall.

The victim, whose name is being withheld until notification of next of kin, was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

If it is determined that the driver’s death was caused by the collision, it would be the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to nine at the same time last year.
