Report No. C0802651

Media Release

On January 25, 2008, (Friday) at approximately 5:30 p.m. Vice Officers served a search warrant on a residence located less then 125 feet from Waiakeawaena Elementary school at 2420 Kilauea Ave in Hilo. Officers later charged two brothers who resided at the house with drug and firearm violations.

Upon service of the warrant, officers recovered 24.9 grams of powdered cocaine, 81.6 grams of dried processed marijuana, 17 marijuana plants, 448 prescriptions pills which were contained in plastic zip lock bags and unmarked pill bottles (consisting primarily of Oxycodone and Hydrocodone), an electric stun gun and a .22 caliber pistol. Police seize $1,111 in currency for forfeiture.

Officers arrested six men at the home. After conferring with prosecutors, two men were charged and the others were released pending further investigation.

Charged were Wailani Kenui, 23, and brother Kalani Kenui, 31. Bail was set at $31,000 for Wailani Kenui and $26,000 for Kalani Kenui. Both men later posted bail and were released pending court appearances.

A State of Hawaii medicinal marijuana permit had been issued for the property. However, the amount of marijuana recovered invalidated the exemption granted by the law.

Wailani Kenui was charged with the offense of promoting a controlled substance near schools or public parks. This law makes it a Class C felony to distribute or possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance within 750 feet of a school or public park.
