The Hawaii Police Department will conduct special DUI checkpoints this week and next week with participation from students and relatives of DUI victims.

Donna Madrid, who is coordinating a project to monitor court proceedings related to DUI arrests, will also be present.

One checkpoint will be set up in Pahoa with students from Pahoa> >High School and students from the newly-established University Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (UMADD).

A Pahoa> >High School student will display a poster of her mother, who died in a DUI crash last year. Other students will wave signs and distribute donated bottled water to sober drivers as they pass through the checkpoint.

In Waimea, relatives of a brother and sister killed in two separate drunk driving crashes will display posters with photos of their loved ones. They will also wave signs and distribute bottled water.

Police will conduct additional DUI checkpoints and continue patrolling for impaired drivers throughout the holiday season and into the New Year.
